A letter written by William F. Proctor (Vice President) to Isslee A. Hooper (President) of the Singer Manufacturing Company dated 1868; sent from their manufactory at High John Street, Glasgow, Scotland, UK
Isslee A. Hooper was the first man to hold the title of president for the company. He had entered Singers employ as a clerk shortly after production started in 1851. When the company was incorporated as the Singer Manufacturing Company in 1863 he was selected for the number-one post of president, and served as such until his resignation 13 years later. He continued serving on the board for a further three years. During his reign the first foreign factory was opened in Scotland in 1867.
William F. Proctor, “I have been connected with the manufacture of sewing machines since 1853 up to the present time. I have been engaged in various capacities; first as a machinist with I. M. Singer & Co. I afterwards went to France for them for the sale of a patent, and established a manufactory of machines there. Since the Singer Manufacturing Company has become established, I have been a director since its origin, and an officer in various capacities, and am now its vice president.”

I had intended to defer communicating your esteemed form of the 9th inst till l had more time, and writing at length on general affairs of the business, but as “procastination is the theif of time” l was fearful l might fall into the habit, of some or all of xxxxxx, on the other side of the Atlantic and it was to be about next Christmas if l should then be xxxx that you might reasonabily expect a personal letter from me. The affairs of the Co have l xxxxxxxx to keep you pretty well informed as it is possible to do in regular letters, weekly , and believe the results of this enterprise will be satisfactory to all. I am much obliged to you for the statements of last years business and think they exhibit very good, and pleased also that the prospect for a dividend at and early day is also good. My health and that of my family continue good. I shall probably have considerable to contend with, to get them to protract then stay in this current climate, and shall make some sacrifice myself. I am expecting a visit from my father in law, in June, and be preponed, a tour through the highlands. I really if l was not in Europe he would have left for America this spring. I have taken a house at xxx on the xxx for two months this summer, where it is said to be endurable. I don’t know as it would be interesting to you to know that the price of provisions here, in such l don’t know as l know myself but l find l am not saving much according to Mr Cheynes statement of xxx in bringing them here for gold and paying the exchange on New York, and paying the xxx tax, when the money is made and spent here, however l have no fault to find, when l considered to come here there was no expectation or desire for a xxx benefit, the exchange has been xxx xxx and l never in my life enjoyed better health. There are many things l would like to be informed about such as the agreements between the commission and the licensees of our company also who is engaging on the xxx of the two Hoovers’ and in short about the general affairs of the company. If at any time you can find a moment xxx should be very happy to have you inform me. The communications l get from the Co singed xxx are all well enough in there way and are only interesting when they contain invoices of goods shipped. Remember me to all my entrustees, and believe me
